The Quick Compliance Checklist
Under FCC Part 80 and USCG regulations, certain vessels must carry a valid FCC Safety Radiotelephony Certificate. Failure to have a current inspection (Form 824) can result in heavy fines or being turned back at the dock.
You are likely “Compulsory” if you are:
- Small Passenger Vessels: Carrying more than 6 passengers for hire (for any reason) in the open sea or tidewaters (Subchapter T vessels).
- Commercial Fishing Vessels: Any vessel over 300 gross tons.
- Bridge-to-Bridge Act Vessels: Power-driven vessels over 65 feet in length.
- International Voyagers: Any US vessel over 300 gross tons on an international voyage.
How often is it required? These inspections are required every 5 years.
